Walking ClubUnderground Church

On Friday 17 October members of Mottram Evangelical Church went into Staffordshire to find Lud’s Church.
The walk began in the rocky moorland of the Roaches. Then we went into Forest Wood to discover the very well hidden deep chasm known as Lud’s Church. The church is a natural feature lying below the Wood’s normal ground level with space (where it opens out) for several hundred people.
Over the years the chasm has offered shelter to all sorts of renegades including Robin Hood.
It is also fairly certain that the Lollards, followers of John Wycliffe, an early church reformer, used it as a place of worship in the 15th century when they were condemned as heretics.

Just one of our many walks in 2008 (we also did Tryfan in Snowdonia on a very wet and windy Saturday in August) and the Glossop plane wrecks walk in May. Want to join in? Keep an eye on this page for details of next walks.
